Lambo roll out a soft top version of the Gallardo Superleggera and call it the Performante

Here’s Lambo’s latest: the Spyder version of the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera. Rather than call it a Superleggera Spyder though, it’s moniker is Performante. Why is a mystery, it translates as high performance and is feminine, but who are we to quibble over a name when the product is sumptuous? Like the fixed top, its raison d’être is lightness. Lamborghini have shaved 65 kgs off the kerb weight over the cooking roadster by using those superlight Superleggera rims and an abundance of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). Alcantara seats are lighter than traditional leather so guess what you get? You do however get aircon and ICE (unlike the Porsche Cayman R we just covered). And you can make your car lighter still by deleting the rear carbon wing off the options list; but that would be a shame.

The last Lamborghini Murcielago to roll off the production line

End of the line for Lamborghini’s Murcielago

So the last Murcielago rolls off the Lamborghini production line. Strange to finish on chassis number 4099. why not make it a nice rounded number like 4000 or 4100? This LP 670-4 Superveloce ends a long production run spanning nearly ten years. Sad to see it go, but even more exciting is the factory space it liberates for its successor and future models. Lamborghini’s Sesto Elemento, shown at the Paris Motor Show hints at its replacement. The Murcielago was looking dated and hasn’t had the invigorating makeovers lately that keep the Gallardo fresh and exciting.

From Lamborghini
One of the most successful super sports cars of all time takes a bow – the last Murciélago to be produced bears the number 4,099

It is one of the most stunning and successful super sports cars of all time – the Lamborghini Murciélago. And that will always be the case, even if its production life has now come to an end. At the headquarters of the badge bearing the sign of the bull in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the last Murciélago left the production line on May 11, 2010 – headed to a Swiss customer. With “Arancio Atlas” paintwork, the LP 670-4 Superveloce proudly bears the production number 4,099. This makes the Murciélago not only by far the most-produced Lamborghini twelve-cylinder of all time, but also one of the world’s most successful super sports cars.

Paris Motor Show - Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Lamborghini spearhead weight reduction program with carbon fibre show car

Compare the specs of Lamborghini’s Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, launched at the Geneva Show last March, and the new Sesto Elemento and you’d be forgiven for thinking this is just a rebodied Gallardo show car. 570 bhp in a 4-wheel drive chassis sounds identical. Look at the weight difference though and you’ll realise why Lambo are proudly presenting this show car as a ground-breaking prototype. The Superleggera was already the lightest car in the range at 1340 kgs (dry weight), but this Sesto Elemento comes in under the 1000 kegs mark. They had to chuck out all sorts of cabin trim and superfluous gizmos and build it almost entirely in carbon fibre to reach 999 kgs. The result is that Lambo claim a 0 to 100 km/h (0-62mph) time of only 2.5 secs compared to the Superleggera’s 3.4 seconds – What a difference weight, or lack of it makes. It’s curious, and very welcome, to see the manufacturers vying to produce lighter cars at last, when until recently, all cars seemed to get heavier as the model cycles progressed. It goes without saying that power to weight ratio increases substantially and performance per unit of energy consumed is on the up.

The Sesto Elemento (Sixth Element) is really a technology demonstrator though, championing Lambo’s advance in carbon fibre moulding and their ability to blend it with plastics to give both rigidity and quality finish at low weight. It points to the future and also hints at the Murcielago replacement that must surely be waiting around the next bend. Let Lamborghini talk you through the finer points of the technology by reading on…

Auto Regalia USB Mini & Lamborghini Murcielago

We pit Lambo’s Murcielago against Mini Cooper in this USB giant test!

After reading our Motormouse review back last autumn, motor gizmo specialist Auto Regalia were keen for us to try other products. “How about a review of a USB stick” they asked? Seriously underwhelmed by the prospect – I mean, a stick is a stick, it’s just that some are made larger than others, right? “Hey, these ones are die-cast metal, beautifully detailed miniatures” they retorted. “We can even supply them in yellow!” Well that clinched it, and behold, we have a brace of “HotWheels” with capacities only juggernauts could muster to play with (4 GB in this case ).

Auto Regalia USB Mini Cooper - wheels turn

Whipped out of their packaging, the weight and solidity of the castings were immediately apparent. No flimsy, snap-fit-plastic, 5-second wonder, but finely detailed models of the real thing. Even the Mini’s taillight cluster surrounds are chrome painted. Put the two models together and the major difference is the huge rear protuberance on the 1:72 scale Lambo; like someone bolted a fridge on the back. Unlike the Mini, the USB connector is not retractable and ruins the lines of the car’s backend. Underneath the Mini a press-and-slide catch neatly stows the USB connector when not in use.

Geneva Motor Show 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera – pay more, get less. Less weight that is, because Superleggera in italian means Superlight. Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera at Geneva Show 2010

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera – pay more, get less. Less weight that is, because Superleggera in italian means Superlight. You get less glass because side, rear window, engine cover are all made of high quality polycarbonate. Less, because just about every interior panel and trim is carbon fibre or featherweight alcantara. To counterbalance all these negatives, we should mention you get more power from the V10, not a huge amount more; power is up to 570 as the model number suggests, but because of the 70kg weight loss that translates into faster nimbler handling and acceleration. Good enough for a claimed 3.4 seconds 0-62 mph (100kmh). Visually there are quite a few detail changes, with more aggressive front air scoops, rear diffuser and fixed rear wing. Notice the front air intakes are black on the side of the lower wings. There’s a distinctly new arrow shaped look being developed here; an evolution of the Gallardo’s front profile, which will no doubt appear on future variations of the car.

Hey, it’s Pirelli Calendar time! And here’s Brit pop singer James Blunt emerging from a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce. But rather than train the spotlights on the celebrities, the extra LED lighting highlights the cars’ wheel arches where the Italian rubber is the star. The Venue is London where JB is joined by Lady Victoria Hervey, fab actress Lily Cole, and gorgeous Brit model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who stars, amongst others, in the Brazilian shoot for the fabled Milanese tyre co. This super coveted calendar is limited to corporate gifts, so photographer Terry Richardson’s work won’t be seen too widely, unless the prized wall-adorners make their way on to ebay or google images..!

Lamborghini Reventon Roadster

Before you get too excited though we should tell you this is the most expensive Lambo ever to come out of Sant’Agata Bolognese at 1.1 million Euros + taxes, and there will only be 20 ever made. Not much chance of spotting one ’round the Dog & Duck then…

Paintwork is a matt grey called Reventon Grey. Hmm, original ? Mind you, it would look spectacular in just about any colour. More facts and figures on next page.
