YikeBike - folded and ready to go

YW test drives the latest electric bike invented by YikeBike

Top gadget or serious last mile commuter electro-cycle? The bulky Segway really put a firecraker in the staid environs of the PMD or Personal Mobile Device. Their electric twin wheeled lean-mobiles are a triumph of lateral thinking made possible by the availability of new battery technology and gyroscopes. Their success spurned inventors to create other revolutionary devices and for the results to be taken seriously by investor and public alike. Electric longboards, trikes and trad-bikes in all shapes have appeared. Most striking one of these was on display and available for test drives at the recent Gadget Show Live exhibition: the YikeBike. Kiwi inventor and entrepreneur Grant Ryan and YikeBike co-founder Peter Higgins flew in with their team all the way from Canterbury New Zealand to show their carbon fibre YikeBike to press and public.

Unable to resist making a fool of himself our valiant scribbler Timtim queued up for a few tentative laps of the test area. Over to you Timtim.

Safety gear donned and disclaimer signed I approached the YikeBike a trifle nervously. I’d just watched a demo of how the “bike” folded from adult sized electro-penny-farthing-for-the-23rd-century to briefcase-sized-carbon-centrifuge with the flick of a few catches and levers. I’d also sampled the minuscule weight. Would 10kgs of carbon and li-po battery form a stable platform from which to navigate the urban roads it’s designed to handle? That’s the weight of a normal bicycle without battery, electric motor, control box, front and backlights, indicators!

K1 Attack at PistonHeads / Autosport Racing Car Show

Standing out amongst the display cars in the PistonHeads section of the Autosport Racing Car Show, K1′s Attack drew all the crowds. Here was a car no-one could identify, and countless visitors bombarded the car’s minder with pertinent questions. Firstly, is it a show car: well yes, except that there are around 50 Attacks in circulation. How come we’ve never seen any? It’s Slovakian, and they don’t make right hand drive versions for the UK. Is it a kit car? K1 started out building them as kits, but they evolved into fully fledged road ready rampagers. But this one’s RHD? It’s a total rebuild by enthusiast and owner Oliver Ashley, horizontally flipping the drivers controls.

Lotus unveiled their Cup racer, based on the Evora at the Autosport Racing Car show in Birmingham on Thursday. Aimed at the various one make and endurance series, the GT4 spec Cup car sports a 4 litre V6 race engine good for 400PS plus six speed sequential paddle shift dog gearbox. 200kg lighter than the production car it’s gonna be quick! Here it is taking pride of place on the Lotus stand, deftly accompanied by a yellow Lotus Eleven2 with reversed colour scheme: ie green stripe, yellow body vs Evora’s green body, yellow stripe. Cup races will be UK only for 2010, extending Europe wide in 2011.

Porsche GT3 R

It looks a racer if every respect, harking back to earlier Le Mans entries with it’s bolt on rear arches, massive rear wing, single vertical wiper, quick-fill fuel nozzle. Inside all vestiges of the road car are gone. The cockpit is dominated by it’s quick release steering wheel and massive sequential gear stick. It’s yours for a cool 279,000 euros in basic trim without taxes…
