Paris Motor Show 2010 - Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

Porsche’s 911 Carrera S gains girth and grunt and a couple of extra letters: GT

Star attraction on Porsche’s stand in Paris was the blue Speedster, but it was flanked by a brace of new Carrera GTS models in white. Roadster and coupé share the Carrera 4′s extra rear width without the 4-wheel drive but gain a few more horses in the tail; 23 to be precise, taking power up to 408 bhp. Sounds like every permutation of Porsche build spec was thrown up in the air and what landed fettled into a new model. We bet it’s brilliant though, as all 911′s are.

Paris Motor Show 2010 - Porsche 911 Speedster

Porsche shave a couple of inches off a windscreen and make the roof manual – Hey presto, you have a Speedster

Another year, another pointless Porsche. Faced with a Paris showstand potentially devoid of new models, the 911 Speedster was conjured up by Porsche’s “Exclusive” department to lend a hand to the mildly modified 911 lineup. 356 of these marketing specials will be made to satisfy the collectors appetite. Naturally specs have been bumped up marginally, and a few exclusive bodystyling and interior mods incorporated to justify the 144,100 UKPounds ticket price. You have to wonder though why you’d want one of these specials over the standard convertible. I mean, manual roof, inferior air management when roof down…And a lesson from history for the aficionados: The 1989 911 Speedster had a limited run of 171 cars, but was then superseded by a wide-bodied turbolook version of which 2,103 were made, making a mockery of the exclusivity of the Speedster.

Having said all that, we admit that it drew our attention, as intended, and we know in our hearts, that once at the wheel of a Speedster all these criticisms would evaporate – blown into the weeds by the sheer thrill of driving any 911!

Porsche expand lineup with awesome GT2 RS

The New Porsche 911 GT2 RS most powerful 911 ever

You’re a car manufacturer exhibiting at the Moscow motor show, so you need some new metal to show off, right? Except they mean business in Russia, so poncing around with some-eco concept is not going to endear you to the Gasprom billionaires eager to flout some mean motoring muscle. Bring forth the 620bhp Porker GT2 RS. You can trump your Igors as well as your Donalds with “Most powerful Road Porsche ever”, or “7 minutes and a bit ’round the ‘Ring”. Cool, that is, ’till the next iteration of the 911, which, historically has to be ’round the next kurve (or at the Paris Show next September?)

We’re fans of lightness here at YW, so the news that this GT2 RS sheds 70kgs over it’s GT2 sibling is welcome. You’ve just ejected an adult passenger’s weight. Now consider there’s an extra 90bhp to play with and it’s hardly a surprise that this is one quick car. Power-to-weight ratio is king, as long as you can still transmit torque to the road, and with 325/30 ZR 19 width rubber, it should translate into fast forward motion. How’s this weight lost? Carbon bonnet, inner door panels, seats, spoilers and…these days every damn thing is made of carbon!

Porsche’s Geneva Show was all hybrids, but there’s none of that here. To keep PC the GT2 RS squeezes a couple of extra miles out of a gallon of jungle juice and coughs out a few less CO2s. Mention this under your breath in certain circles though, as 284 g/km and 23.7 mpg is not exactly “green”. Maybe it’s time to refresh the smaller cars in Porsche’s lineup, rather than magic another über-batmobile out of the Stuttgart hat. Where’s the new Boxster/Cayman? That’s more up our street – leave the Cayennes and Panemeras (hippos and mammoths) and give us the new wünder-sports-lightweights (hares and whippets).

Porsche 911 with Aerokit Cup package fitted

Look hunky with Porsche’s Official Aerokit Cup bodykit

You know when you were young and got your first car? Your immediate hankering was for something faster and hornier than your insurance bill would permit. So instead you fitted your puny-mobile with wide arches, hunky tyres and spoilers. This turned your bland-mobile into a shed, that you’d look back at with nostalgia but acute embarrassment later in life. Now, you’re a mature 30 or 40 something adult, you own a tasty sportscar but remember the fun of modding your motor. Now is the time to take your Porsche 911 back to the dealer to have Porsche’s new Aerokit Cup package retrofitted so that you’ll look the part turning up in the race paddock.

Porsche have released a body kit to make your 911 look like the racers that compete in the Mobil 1 Supercup. This translates to new front chin spoiler and rear fixed wing. You also have the option of fitting paddle shifts a-la-911-Turbo. But to take you back to the 60′s – 70′s …. you can also get a five-spoke retro alloy. All this is ludicrously expensive of course, but hey, you knew that already when the words Official Porsche were uttered. You could “save” money by ordering your 911 with these mods factory fitted too.

New Porsche 911 Turbo S

New Porsche 911 Turbo S cabriolet

Porsche will launch a new more powerful 911 Turbo at the Geneva Show next month. It’s an “S” model to distinguish itself from previous iterations, and packs an extra 30 BHP into it’s rear haunches to give it the power boost, which we all want! But do we? Is this just an excuse to have a new model to present at the forthcoming show? Porsche as usual, are playing the power upgrade route to keep them at the top of the pecking order. However that’s not good enough in itself: Porsche claim they achieve this extra output without increasing fuel consumption and add a 7 speed PDK gearbox and extra gizmos to counter the torque effects of all that power behind the driveline. That’s only 6 months between the launch of the seventh gen 911 Turbo at last year’s Frankfurt Show and this Turbo S.

Motormouse Porsche shaped wireless computer mouse

Motormouse Porsche shaped wireless computer mouse

Treat your PC to a Porsche this Christmas ! The weather’s foul, the roads icy; what better time to stay indoors and surf the internet. To keep you company on the journey through the web, why not splash out on your very own PC Porsche? Not only will it remain under your control, but steer you through cyberspace with style and aplomb. This season’s must-have gadget comes to you from Motormouse, a startup company that sealed it’s success by wooing investor James Caan on BBC’s Dragon’s Den TV programme.

Our silver sample came complete with a signed card by James Caan, but this is not standard, available or included in the price, but a special surprise as we picked up our motormouse from the sellers’ stand at the Earls Court MPH Show.

The packaging quality and style convinced us immediately that this was a pukka product. opening the box confirmed this was more than skin deep. Reaching in and grabbing the car, you instinctively want to push it along your desk to see how well it glides, and turn it over to inspect the pull-back motor. Hang on, this is a mouse, not scale model ! Inserting the 2 AAA alkalines provided, adds to the expectancy of self-propulsion, but a USB wireless dongle, which you store in a recess in the boot breaks the spell, and brings you back to reality…or virtual reality?!
