Up close with Porsche 918 RSR Hybrid

A year ago Porsche’s 918 surprise at the Geneva Motor Show blew us away. Looking small and dainty but extraordinarily desirable it was pitched as a Carrera GT replacement. Yet it didn’t quite have the commanding presence of the GT, even if it’s spec and integration of hybrid technology made it worthy. If it’s 7:30min Nürburgring lap time is anything to go on, then it certainly qualified on speed and agility. Something about the folded paper look, lack of roof and delicate detailing of the show car made us want to put some horny rims on, install a loud exhaust and wake up the neighbours.

Geneva Motor Show 2011 - Porsche 918 RSR - embroidered seat and electro fill cap

Now exhibited in racing trim at the 2011 Geneva Show, that desire is mostly answered. the fixed roof, arch-filling racing slicks, additional carbon aerodynamic aids and orange “racing” decals vaguely recalling Gulf Oil sponsorship of the past, give it a butchness it was otherwise lacking. If Batman turned up in this beast, Gotham City would stand back and know what was coming. If Batman had turned up in the 918 “prototype”, he’d have Robin mince out slyly, while he conducted proceedings from his iPad3.

Porsche 918 RSR on the menu at 2011 Detroit Auto Show

Take a Porsche 918 Spyder, a GT3R Hybrid, a 917 short-tail, a 908 long tail, mix your ingredients in a Stuttgart bowl. measure out 70% Gulf Racing blue and infuse with 30% liquid metal chrome. Pour into a CFRP oven-proof container and bake for 9 months in a moderate autoclave. Carefully place 917 fan into top cover and insert front splitter and RS Spyder racer’s wing, and allow to become cool. Now decorate with orange stripe and “22” to recall racing glories. Voila, a “racing laboratory” and PR exercise neatly baked, with a Michelin 4 rubber ring rating. However, this is an experimental recipe and should be tasted with reserve until a full race version has been prepared to perfection.

Ingredients:
1 RS Syder V8 race engine and drive-train (563 bhp – 767 bhp when blended with flywheel)
1 GT3R Flywheel accumulator and electric motors (204 bhp, care, may spin viciously)
1 918 Syder monocoque and body (peel and grate, cover with fold forward doors)
1 917 fan cooling system (boil 40 years to reduce)
1 908 Body styling cues (free lunch)
add a liberal dose of racing heritage
(CGI rendering optional )

Read on for master-chef’s full description and baking tips – a foodie’s feast

Cosworth team up with Bloodhound SSC to provide pumping power and electronics to the supersonic record car

You’d wonder what on earth use a formula 1 engine would be in a jet propelled car? Cosworth’s 750 bhp engine can power a lightweight F1 car to 200mph, but 1000mph? OK, well the answer is that Bloodhound needs hydraulic power and a massive amount of fuel pumped into its rocket motors and that pump needs to handle a whopping 40 seconds of 3-4g acceleration. That’s what F1 cars experience regularly, but for only a few seconds….Cosworth are confident it can handle it and will supply data electronics to match. Here’s the official line:

Nurburgring hosts Renault’s Megane Trophy race

The scene is the Nurburgring, weather splendidly sunny, crowds basking in the aura generated by the weekend’s racing. There’s a mini funfair, bars aplenty, Renaults everywhere in all shapes and styles. Classic Renaults bid for attention next to slick single seaters, all powered by the french marque. But we are strangely drawn to the menacing shape of the Megane Coupe racers nosing out of pit the garages.

Pierre Hirschi - cheerful banter with the team

These silhouette, mid-engined monsters race in a one make/model series that’s part of Renault’s World Series. These events are free to the public and consequently well attended. We pick, slightly at random (and guess what, it’s yellow), a Hifi Filters sponsored Megane amongst a trio of Oregon Team prepared cars. Driver Pierre Hirschi speaks broken English which is a start, and perfect Swiss-French which suits us fine. We decide to follow him for the day rather than write a race report about a formula we’ve never witnessed. This genial 50 year old is clearly not out to be the next Schumacher, but enjoy a weekend’s racing. He qualifies as a “Gentleman Racer”, an amateur sub-class of the large field contesting the Megane Trophy Series.

Lexus LFA Nürburgring special edition

Lexus just announced a souped-up version of their, already super-quick, supercar, the LFA. Not content with launching their wildest ever car back in September, they’ve laced the mix with some extra spice. Extra hot ingredient is a 10bhp uprating of the 4.8 Litre V10 to 562 bhp. The special LFA needs this extra sauce to maintain performance despite the addition of downforce-generating mods to front spoiler, side fins and fixed rear wing. Lexus have entered the Nürburgring 24hours race, where aerodynamics are king, but are offering 50 examples for buyers, so you could order this version as your trackday special. Lexus have had the good taste to paint these specials in yellow ;-)…now is that carrot and corriander, or thai curry yellow!

Geneva Motor Show Porsche 911 GT3R Hybrid Racer and kinetic drive

Not content to launch a new Cayenne in hybrid form and a stonking 918 hybrid concept at Geneva, Porsche showed a hybrid version of its new GT3R racing car. Set to race for real at the Nürburgring, this is no concept but a fully fledged 911 endurance racer. What sets it apart from the competition, particularly in the hybrid sense, is that it runs a flywheel type energy recovery, storage and power plant to supplement the 4 litre flat-six petrol engine engine in the tail rather than a battery pack.

Geneva Motor Show - Porsche 911 GT3R Hybrid racer

Electrically spun, the flywheel stores kinetic energy and transfers it back to twin front electric drive motors, effectively giving 4 wheel drive on demand. Braking electrically respins the flywheel for a 6-8 second burst of extra power and traction. No word from Porsche as to whether there are any negative gyroscopic effects in the corners (or at all), but it should be more stable at high speed if the flywheel mass is sufficient. The system appears to rely on its high rotation speed rather than pure spinning weight. And anyway most cars have four spinning gyroscopes covered in rubber; one at each corner ;-)
So how would you feel about sitting next to what looks like a personal nuclear fusion reactor ? Should be fine really as it’s just a disc spinning at, err, 40,000rpm….but at least it has been developed by Williams Hybrid Power Ltd and Torotrak so does have some F1 technology built in.

Think six axis simulator, and your brain automatically imagines a budget only NASA would contemplate. Think racing car sim, and you’d guess this is the domain of upper echelon Formula 1 teams. But here we are strapped into a full motion rig with three giant screens and a spec to match; yours for 150,000 Euros. This the price of a supercar rather than space rocket, and well within the range of rich car nuts with suitably large garages! So what do you get for your money? Cruden, the manufacturers of this fourth generation Hexatech 3CTR, their first three seater jiggler in Europe, give you a full hydraulic virtual vehicle, kitted out with all the latest force-feedback sensors and actuators. Not only does the steering wheel transmit turning torque back to your hands, but pedals are equipped too, not to mention the racing harness which tightens under load. All is calculated to give you the nearest, most realistic driving or racing experience.

Porsche GT3 R

It looks a racer if every respect, harking back to earlier Le Mans entries with it’s bolt on rear arches, massive rear wing, single vertical wiper, quick-fill fuel nozzle. Inside all vestiges of the road car are gone. The cockpit is dominated by it’s quick release steering wheel and massive sequential gear stick. It’s yours for a cool 279,000 euros in basic trim without taxes…
