Up close with Porsche 918 RSR Hybrid

A year ago Porsche’s 918 surprise at the Geneva Motor Show blew us away. Looking small and dainty but extraordinarily desirable it was pitched as a Carrera GT replacement. Yet it didn’t quite have the commanding presence of the GT, even if it’s spec and integration of hybrid technology made it worthy. If it’s 7:30min Nürburgring lap time is anything to go on, then it certainly qualified on speed and agility. Something about the folded paper look, lack of roof and delicate detailing of the show car made us want to put some horny rims on, install a loud exhaust and wake up the neighbours.

Geneva Motor Show 2011 - Porsche 918 RSR - embroidered seat and electro fill cap

Now exhibited in racing trim at the 2011 Geneva Show, that desire is mostly answered. the fixed roof, arch-filling racing slicks, additional carbon aerodynamic aids and orange “racing” decals vaguely recalling Gulf Oil sponsorship of the past, give it a butchness it was otherwise lacking. If Batman turned up in this beast, Gotham City would stand back and know what was coming. If Batman had turned up in the 918 “prototype”, he’d have Robin mince out slyly, while he conducted proceedings from his iPad3.

YW electric Grand Prix gets underway

Last week we took you to the dog-eat-dog world of radio controlled car racing, with on-board footage and video race report, as organised by The Racing Bug. All fine and fun, but wouldn’t you rather actually be in the car, racing your opponents wheel to wheel for real? Yes, we thought so too, so we took the electric BMW and MINI cars we had on loan out for a thrashing, to see which came out on top. We had to enlist our youngest ever road testers due to the diminutive interiors. So which car was fastest, which one handled better, which one triumphed in the desirability stakes? There was only one way to find out: standby for the first ever YW Electric Grand Prix !

How high can you go? Rally stars take 85 metres jump in their stride!

Gratuitously presented here, for no other reason than they are amazing rally moments, are 10 of the most spectacular jumps from Citroen’s last 10, highly successful, rally seasons. Sebastien Loeb, commenting on his incredible Turkish jump, said: “It was an incredible sensation as we were up in the air for several seconds. Not for a moment did we imagine that we would jump so far.” Championship leaders Citroen and Sebastien will tackle the WRC Finnish Rally (29-31st July) from a commanding lead, and no doubt leap for joy as only they know how!

Yellowwheels presents a supercar gallery from the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood FoS is a fabulous feast of motoring extravaganza, with vehicles of all ages, sizes and types wanging it up the Earl of March’s garden path. Modern F1 cars mix with historic Le Mans cars, motocycles, legendary Grand Prix cars and beautiful, sometimes bizarre classics. But we were drawn to the fleet of immaculate and outrageous supercars assembled for the Sunday Times Supercar run up the hill. Many of these have not been seen in action before; just glimpsed in motorshow reports and the spreads of the glossies.

Renault World Series Megane Trophy Racer Hirschi

Nurburgring hosts Renault’s Megane Trophy race The scene is the Nurburgring, weather splendidly sunny, crowds basking in the aura generated by the weekend’s racing. HiFi-Filter Megane Trophy racecar - Driver: Pierre Hirschi

Nurburgring hosts Renault’s Megane Trophy race

The scene is the Nurburgring, weather splendidly sunny, crowds basking in the aura generated by the weekend’s racing. There’s a mini funfair, bars aplenty, Renaults everywhere in all shapes and styles. Classic Renaults bid for attention next to slick single seaters, all powered by the french marque. But we are strangely drawn to the menacing shape of the Megane Coupe racers nosing out of pit the garages.

Pierre Hirschi - cheerful banter with the team

These silhouette, mid-engined monsters race in a one make/model series that’s part of Renault’s World Series. These events are free to the public and consequently well attended. We pick, slightly at random (and guess what, it’s yellow), a Hifi Filters sponsored Megane amongst a trio of Oregon Team prepared cars. Driver Pierre Hirschi speaks broken English which is a start, and perfect Swiss-French which suits us fine. We decide to follow him for the day rather than write a race report about a formula we’ve never witnessed. This genial 50 year old is clearly not out to be the next Schumacher, but enjoy a weekend’s racing. He qualifies as a “Gentleman Racer”, an amateur sub-class of the large field contesting the Megane Trophy Series.
