Freddie Flintoff flies the flag for Shell FuelSave

What do you get if you mix a cricketer, a kart track, and a litre of petrol?

We thought we’d send our learned correspondent to find out. Timtim knows enough about cricket to fill a postage stamp – ideal we think so he’ll pay attention to the technicalities of brewing jungle juice and not sink to his knees in front of sporting gods!

Timtim: I’m off to Sandown Park in the outer reaches of the Greater London metropolis. My mission to bring you the secrets of saving fuel with Shell’s new 95 octane miser “FuelSave”. The answer my friends is not letting your car be blown by the wind but to fuel up and drive. Simplistic? Yes! Disappointing answer? It’s just that there’s not much to swallow. Your car will experience reduced piston friction, cleaner valves and detonate it’s fuel-air mixture a nanosecond earlier. Shell say you’ll save a litre per tankful which sounds more impressive than  “save 1/60th of your consumption” or “1.66666666667% more fuel efficient” (if your typical car holds 60 litres). But before you all nod off, Shell have wheeled in cricket superstar Freddie Flintoff to bat for them. Come on Freddie your challenge starts now. Watch the video for the answer to life, the universe and saving the princely price of a couple of pints of milk…Oh, and there’s an official site where you can take the Flintoff challenge

How high can you go? Rally stars take 85 metres jump in their stride!

Gratuitously presented here, for no other reason than they are amazing rally moments, are 10 of the most spectacular jumps from Citroen’s last 10, highly successful, rally seasons. Sebastien Loeb, commenting on his incredible Turkish jump, said: “It was an incredible sensation as we were up in the air for several seconds. Not for a moment did we imagine that we would jump so far.” Championship leaders Citroen and Sebastien will tackle the WRC Finnish Rally (29-31st July) from a commanding lead, and no doubt leap for joy as only they know how!

MINI E gets real at home while COP15 woos EVs

As Copenhagen week(s) is still in full swing, car manufacturers are sprinkling a whole load of electric PR across the press. Inevitably some of it rubs off on us. Having just published our electric car timeline feature, we thought we’d hoover up this one as electric Minis sound like a tempting prospect. Of course you […]

Of course you need more than a cute car and a few batteries to get some headlines, so how about this: Gordon Brown gets one on his ministerial fleet. Strangely, this gets announced on the same day as our Boris (Mayor of London, Boris Johnson) chooses Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV to swan around the COP15 environmental summit in Copenhagen. Cast the net wider and you’ll find a whole host of car companies claiming to be THE green vehicle supplier of choice across in Denmark.
Denmark’s Crown Prince HRH Frederik and Fisker Karma

Denmark’s Crown Prince HRH Frederik and Fisker Karma

Clearly Fisker think a Prime minister is a bit lowly, and enlisted Crown Prince HRH Frederik of Denmark to fly the flag. Norwegian manufacturer THINK claims to have the largest EV fleet there. 60 Citroen EVs piled in from the UK. But maybe this is all a smokescreen to hide the disappointment that there’s only room for two in a MINI E ?! The back seat area, normally reserved for your offspring, is primed with 5088 lithium-ion cells to fuel you for a theoretical 150 miles. But whatever the advantages, when an Electric Smart can squeeze motive power into its diminutive body, you have to wonder what’s up?

Tiff Needell interview – Yellow cars: size matters

Since starting a site ostensibly about yellow cars, we’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve been asked “why yellow ?”. Apart from the obvious quip: “why not ?”, we thought we’d rather turn the table and pose the question to others. It’s way more interesting to hear the response, than trot out our […]

Tiff Needell and yellow cars...

Since starting a site ostensibly about yellow cars, we’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve been asked “why yellow ?”. Apart from the obvious quip: “why not ?”, we thought we’d rather turn the table and pose the question to others. It’s way more interesting to hear the response, than trot out our raison d’être. So what do you think of yellow cars ? First up, is racing driver/TV presenter Tiff Needell of Fifth Gear fame. We cornered him at the MPH / Top Gear show in Earls Court and wrenched (rescued ?!) him from the crowd of autograph hunters, sat him down on a handy Caparo T1, thrust the handicam up his nostril, and garnered the answer. Dear readers, we have to report, that his stand point is somewhat at odds with the YW philosophy. Without a moment’s hesitation Tiff declared, in no uncertain terms, that Ferraris should never be yellow! Woah! What’s this then Tiff ? Unrepentant he surmised that it was all a question of size. Yellow cars should be small, and restricted to Fiat 500s, Caterhams, Lotus Exiges. Well, now Mr Needell, we beg to differ, as within spitting distance of the start up area, there was a dashing YELLOW Gallardo festooned with fetching Bob Forstner addenda. Although a Gallardo is compact compared to some supercars, we think it wears it’s yellow paint with pride and splendour. Tiff did at least concede that large taxis are allowed to be yellow. Inevitably, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but why not join the YW forum and tell us what your thoughts are….

Hey, it’s Pirelli Calendar time! And here’s Brit pop singer James Blunt emerging from a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce. But rather than train the spotlights on the celebrities, the extra LED lighting highlights the cars’ wheel arches where the Italian rubber is the star. The Venue is London where JB is joined by Lady Victoria Hervey, fab actress Lily Cole, and gorgeous Brit model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who stars, amongst others, in the Brazilian shoot for the fabled Milanese tyre co. This super coveted calendar is limited to corporate gifts, so photographer Terry Richardson’s work won’t be seen too widely, unless the prized wall-adorners make their way on to ebay or google images..!

Murray Walker Scrapbook

From 1949 to the early naughties Murray Walker really has been the true legend of motor racing commentary. We caught up with him at the Silverstone Classic race meeting last weekend, where he was signing and selling his current book “Murray Walker Scrapbook”. Newer still is Stirling Moss’s version “Stirling Moss Scrapbook” from Porter Press. Stirling had already left, but we got a 60 second voxpop from Murray, describing his book, what’s in it, and a potted history of his career. He really is a true pro and having been told he had 60 seconds stopped, unrehearsed with just a few seconds to go. Listen to him here by clicking on the mp3 link below. It’s so great to hear his unique voice and style again. Thank you Murray!
