A day in the life of a car photographer at an international motorshow

Tim Andrew in action in Giugiaro Brivido Concept car

Ever wondered what happens on a Motor Show press day? The doors open at 7:30am in Geneva – better have your press pass in your hands, or get ready for a long queue. After a 10 minute walk and 25 minute bendy-bus ride from downtown Geneva, photographer Tim Andrew presented his pass and sailed through the turnstyle. First stop was the press room to nab a table, and more importantly, an ethernet cable to upload photos to the client’s server. Excess gear dumped, lightweight necessities grabbed, it was off at a trot to bag the first important “reveal”.

Bendy-bus to the airport after the show

The car manufacturers unveil their cars at 15 minute intervals, so unless you have a team of snappers and journos, it’s impossible to cover them all live. In any case, as a photographer, it’s best to have left the video crews catch the excitement of the covers been whipped off the “world Premieres” and turn up 20 minutes later once the scramble has subsided.

Valencia orange M car completes BMW’s über-sports lineup

1 Series: you’ve been tangoed! BMW’s baby coupe storms into the picture ripe and ready to be peeled and juiced. While squeezing a laudable 227 bhp per tonne out of it’s fruity 3.0 litre engine. More tangerine than navel orange, it sits at the bottom of the M range, but has to call itself 1 Series M Coupe to distinguish it from the original M car, the M1. That M1 was a mid-engined supercar, but such is progress, that it is out-performed by this shopping car on steroids. And it’s those steroids that make this car desirable: without the wide arches, extra spoilers and hot engine the 1 Series looks a bit plain Jane.

Porsche reveal new Cayman R

Porsche Cayman R lands on LA Auto Show docks

It’s the Cayman’s turn to get the “R” treatment

Great to see Porsche inject a little ooomph into their Cayman. It’s been quite a while since it’s been in the news. Porsche have had their hands full launching Panarmeras, Cayennes, Speedsters, racers, hybrids, concepts and a zillion 911 variations. In the meantime the unassuming but highly desirable Cayman has been consistently winning sportscar driving comparisons. It’s carved out a cosy niche below the 911 while delivering sheer driving pleasure derived from its superior drivetrain layout and practical hatch bodyform. Now don’t get too excited though, as there’s only a modest 10 bhp power output boost at a heady 7,200 rpm over the Cayman S, but the real news is the 55 kgs shaved off the car’s kerb weight. That’s equivalent to ejecting a lightish adult and bumps up the power to weight ratio to a useful 250 bhp/tonne. It also makes it 75 kgs lighter than Porsche’s über-car-of-the-moment the GT2 RS. Naturally for an “R” iteration there’s stiffer suspension and more of a trackday handling setup, just don’t go looking for the ICE and aircon as there ‘aint none…

Lotus stun the world with ambitious model launch program: Lotus Elite Concept

If the Paris Motor Show threw up a couple of headline grabbing supercars you’d be happy, curious and envious. Jaguar delivered with their amazing C-X75 electric/turbine hybrid and Lamborghini with their carbon-with-everything Sesto Elemento concept. You’d be stunned if any manufacturer launched two concepts. But five? That’s what Lotus did and blew the press’s mind in the process. Much has been written about the feasibility of this production plan and we don’t have a view other than it seems over-ambitious. The bucket principle says that if you work in a company and ask for ten buckets of whatever to match your needs you’ll get five delivered. Is this the case with Lotus? If we get to see even three of these in the real world within the proposed time schedule we’ll be amazed and happy. All five and we’ll be stunned and elated!

Paris Motor Show 2010 Lotus future model lineup

Don’t forget though, that the first model to go on sale is the Elan a whole 3 years away, so there is plenty of time for the designs to evolve or change substantially. Also the show cars may have been part of a giant focus group rather than a fixed agenda.

Schedule:
Elan 4.0 litre V6 – summer 2013
Elite 5.0 litre V8 – spring 2014
Elise 2.0 litre straight 4 – spring 2014
Esprit 5.0 litre V8 – spring 2015
Eterne 5.0 litre V8 – spring 2015

Porsche’s 911 Carrera S gains girth and grunt and a couple of extra letters: GT

Star attraction on Porsche’s stand in Paris was the blue Speedster, but it was flanked by a brace of new Carrera GTS models in white. Roadster and coupé share the Carrera 4’s extra rear width without the 4-wheel drive but gain a few more horses in the tail; 23 to be precise, taking power up to 408 bhp. Sounds like every permutation of Porsche build spec was thrown up in the air and what landed fettled into a new model. We bet it’s brilliant though, as all 911’s are.

Audi’s Quattro Concept points to future while harking back to the 80’s

Take an RS5, chop 150mm off the wheelbase, lop off surplus overhangs, chuck out the back seats, and send the whole shebang on a high carbon diet and what do you get? Strangely Audi would have you believe a modern iteration of the short wheel base Quattro. Well, a concept anyway. True it sports a 5 cylinder turbo, 4-wheel drive and some styling cues from the boxy 1984 rally homologation special. In truth it’s more of a technical exercise, an engineers’ crash course in losing weight in all areas and pointer to the immediate future. And yet when all the kilos have been shaved from body, chassis, engine and drivetrain this concept weighs the same as the original at 1300 kgs. Luckily it’ all wrapped up in a beautiful body, much prettier than the cut-and-shunt brute of the original and poised as a combustion engine antidote to the electric E-Tron with which it shares the stand.

2011 Nissan GT-R - includes mystery silver windscreen ?!

Nissan’s GT-R gets some power boosts and tweaks

2011 is only 9 weeks away, which means, in the UK, VAT will increase to 20%. So no doubt Nissan’s marketing team has been working hard to keep their flagship GT-R under the 70,000 UKP price barrier. The 2011 price limbo does at least get you some extra power and features. Engine output soars to 530PS (390KW)/6,400rpm, launch control gets tweaked, body mods up front incorporate LED running lights and aerodynamic slats, but what caught our eyes in the spec is the addition of automatic decoupling of the 4wd system below 6MPH for tight turns. Not a headline feature, but a measure of the fabulous attention to detail Nissan engineers have put into this car. Numerous other mods complete the package: more details below

Goodwood FoS is a fabulous feast of motoring extravaganza, with vehicles of all ages, sizes and types wanging it up the Earl of March’s garden path. Modern F1 cars mix with historic Le Mans cars, motocycles, legendary Grand Prix cars and beautiful, sometimes bizarre classics. But we were drawn to the fleet of immaculate and outrageous supercars assembled for the Sunday Times Supercar run up the hill. Many of these have not been seen in action before; just glimpsed in motorshow reports and the spreads of the glossies.

BMW announce a special track day version of their M3, the GTS

Yesterday Porsche announced the GT2 RS road going racer. The boys down in Munich, answering to the age-old rivalry, are not going to be left out of the equation – so here it is: the BMW M3 GTS, a car equipped for the track day, but with road-legal credentials. Like the Porsche it sheds 70kgs by ditching all sorts of kit, such as the rear side and back windows. You get polycarbonate ones instead. Carbon-reinforced plastic roof and trim help shave the weight too. Like the Porsche you get welcome power-to-weight improvements. The BMW 3.4 kg/bhp, The Porsche 2.2 kg/bhp – that could be quite a clear difference on the track! Off the track the difference will no doubt swing the other way as the GT2 RS will cost 235,000 Euros in Germany. BMW haven’t revealed the price yet, but it’s likely to be significantly less – possibly in proportion to the difference in P2WRatio? Ummh, maybe not. The BMW’s price will include six-point racing harnesses and fire extinguisher though. Both have roll cages as standard. All in all a nice piece of kit to drive to the track, scare your passenger and look the part in the process. Only thing is; they are all going to be orange – hey, what’s wrong with yellow, it’s only a couple shades away on the colour pallets?! Read on for specs.

Porsche 911 with Aerokit Cup package fitted

Look hunky with Porsche’s Official Aerokit Cup bodykit

You know when you were young and got your first car? Your immediate hankering was for something faster and hornier than your insurance bill would permit. So instead you fitted your puny-mobile with wide arches, hunky tyres and spoilers. This turned your bland-mobile into a shed, that you’d look back at with nostalgia but acute embarrassment later in life. Now, you’re a mature 30 or 40 something adult, you own a tasty sportscar but remember the fun of modding your motor. Now is the time to take your Porsche 911 back to the dealer to have Porsche’s new Aerokit Cup package retrofitted so that you’ll look the part turning up in the race paddock.

Porsche have released a body kit to make your 911 look like the racers that compete in the Mobil 1 Supercup. This translates to new front chin spoiler and rear fixed wing. You also have the option of fitting paddle shifts a-la-911-Turbo. But to take you back to the 60’s – 70’s …. you can also get a five-spoke retro alloy. All this is ludicrously expensive of course, but hey, you knew that already when the words Official Porsche were uttered. You could “save” money by ordering your 911 with these mods factory fitted too.
