Nominally retro and recalling the famous racing car of the same number, it’s purpose in life is to give us Porsche performance with outstanding CO2 output and fuel efficiency. Claiming 70 grams CO2 per kilometre and fuel consumption to 3.0 litres/100 kilometres (94 mpg imp, this mid-engined two-seater combines the performance of a super-sports car with the CO2 emissions of a small compact. K1 Attack at PistonHeads / Autosport Racing Car Show

Standing out amongst the display cars in the PistonHeads section of the Autosport Racing Car Show, K1’s Attack drew all the crowds. Here was a car no-one could identify, and countless visitors bombarded the car’s minder with pertinent questions. Firstly, is it a show car: well yes, except that there are around 50 Attacks in circulation. How come we’ve never seen any? It’s Slovakian, and they don’t make right hand drive versions for the UK. Is it a kit car? K1 started out building them as kits, but they evolved into fully fledged road ready rampagers. But this one’s RHD? It’s a total rebuild by enthusiast and owner Oliver Ashley, horizontally flipping the drivers controls.

We heard, via Twitter, about a website that totally transforms your car for just a few dollars. Intrigued as our house mascot Golf GTi was just about to go to the bodyshop to get a couple of panels repaired and a new lick of yellow paint. How could they do it for the money?

We delved deeper to see how it could be possible. Autemo.com is the site, beautifully laid out yet functional, it’s mission to virtually transform cars. No sheet metal gets cut, no bodykit riveted, no trick paint spayed; it’s all done in Photoshop. Fancy turning that rusty old Nissan into a Tokyo drift dreamcar? That cooking Chevy into chopped chariot? Test drive the mods you are planning for your ride before committing to the bodyshop. When your pimpmobile hits the spot you can convert your car for real reassured your facelift will be more super-car than super-shed.

Go to Autemo, read the intro, take the tour and decide what sort of look you are aiming for. Then simply upload a photo, select an artist, and commit a derisory AUD $30-$90 to get the car of your dreams. You get to watch progress as the artist uploads WIPs (Work In Progress) photos, and you can comment and request changes. It’s a virtual chop but with real interaction with the artist.

Honda P-NUT Concept car: This is just a styling concept but grabbed our attention because of it’s original shape and city car potential. Strong, purist shapes that make it through to production are rare, and most get watered down through the engineering, marketing and ergonomics depts. Cars that make it through are often the ones that turn heads or become icons. Think of the original Audi TT, second generation VW Beetle, Bentley Continental, even the Vauxhall/Opel Calibra as a few examples plucked out of the ether. So we hope Honda push this through as it is a compelling, exciting shape.

2009 IAA Frankfurt Auto / Motor Show – Tesla Model S and Roadster Sport

Tesla S all electric car: we’d like to call this the first showing of the new model S, however a closer peak at the show car reveals it is exactly that and no more, as doors were fixed shut, interior a mock up and the “chrome” finishing strips around windows etc were cracking under the heat of the show’s spotlights. Still, it’s not scheduled to come out the factory doors ’till 2011, so the cake’s got time to bake. It is at least an elegant and realistic shape that has a great chance of breaking into the mainstream if it can pull off it’s range and power goals at an affordable price. Their website announces $50,000 price tag, 300 mile range, unnecessarily fast acceleration, and sufficiently high top speed. Remarkably there’s room for 5 adults + 2 kids, as well as a front and back trunk.

Tesla Roadster Sport

Next to it, a fetching yellow Roadster Sport, that is available now, is a useful reminder that the future model S is a realistic proposition; even if the Roadster’s price compared to a petrol engined Elise makes you gasp. Remember how expensive a large Plasma screen TV was 10 years ago? And now? The 700th electric Roadster was delivered at the Frankfurt show to a German law student.

BMW’s impressive, indoor-track dominated hall featured the Vision hybrid concept car. Adrian van Hooydonk’s design rotated on display as Efficient Dynamics liveried cars from BMW’s lineup sailed past. How cool to have your own track to display and drive right in the exhibition hall ! As we moved over to the Mini stand we could hear some tasteful V8 sounds emanating from above us, proving that there was more to BMW’s display than showing their efforts to control emission outputs and improve efficiency.

At the heart of their future eco-plans lies the hybrid chassis that the Vision’s aggressive yet svelte bodywork was draped over. Does this mark a swing away from BMW’s plans for hydrogen fuelled cars? Remember the 7 series hydrogen that was being produced on a limited trial basis. Certainly, the whole eco-car movement has pushed towards hybrids and pure electrics, rather than hydrogen, unless in fuel celled cars. Fuel density and transport problems are mostly responsible, and the convenience of converting existing engine technology which was already looking cynical.

We like the principles enshrined in BMW’s philosophy: eco-cars that retain performance and driving pleasure by cutting down weight, and kinetic and aerodynamic losses. But we do question the weight penalty of carrying around a turbodiesel as well as electric motors. This is still intermediate technology to make the all-important range acceptable to ordinary car users. Lose the combustion engine and it’s electric generator and think how much weight you could save. The world still needs a more efficient battery, despite recent advances.

Concept is probably a misnomer as these Minis are slated for production at BMW’s mini plant in Oxford. Revealed at the Frankfurt Show, the coupe had been leaked to the press ahead of the show, but the convertible was the promised second surprise. Both are likely to be fitted with the 1.6 litre turbo Cooper engine, adding to the 1.5 million Minis that have already rolled off the Oxford production line, in this, Mini’s 50th anniversary year. A small caveat; production versions are likely to include less radical screen and roofline profile’s, and as always, more realistic rubber and wheel clearance.
