How high can you go? Rally stars take 85 metres jump in their stride!

Gratuitously presented here, for no other reason than they are amazing rally moments, are 10 of the most spectacular jumps from Citroen’s last 10, highly successful, rally seasons. Sebastien Loeb, commenting on his incredible Turkish jump, said: “It was an incredible sensation as we were up in the air for several seconds. Not for a moment did we imagine that we would jump so far.” Championship leaders Citroen and Sebastien will tackle the WRC Finnish Rally (29-31st July) from a commanding lead, and no doubt leap for joy as only they know how!

YW interviews artist Tim Layzell at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Meet top notch artist Tim Layzell, a star in the automotive art world. He has been featured extensively in the magazines and papers, and so we, here at YW thought he could do with a bit of web exposure for good measure.

The Mountaineers ©Tim Layzell

It was while wandering through the numerous trade stands at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed that we stopped dead in our tracks, in awe of the gripping images hung on Tim’s stand. A fleeting memory of having seen Tim’s work on an Octane Mag cover and maybe also a poster or two, had garnered a Pavlovian reaction in the mind. So this is the guy responsible for the striking pop-artesque 60’s racing designs that are so distinctive and recognisable. Think, detail and accuracy of a Tintin illustration meets punch of a Hockney pop-art painting and you understand the depth of talent and mastery of style and perspective that this artist wields, making his images utterly compelling. Swivel round and you are presented with Tim’s, photorealistic, fantastically detailed second style; an enduring mix of flair, accuracy and emotion – this guy’s got talent!

You can hear it now: you work for a company making slightly invisible products usually topped out with another manufacturer’s glossy body and want to shout about it. The boss says “make something wild and attention grabbing”. The result is baffling and downright stupid, but put it on display and….the public will love it, won’t they?

Yellowwheels presents a supercar gallery from the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood FoS is a fabulous feast of motoring extravaganza, with vehicles of all ages, sizes and types wanging it up the Earl of March’s garden path. Modern F1 cars mix with historic Le Mans cars, motocycles, legendary Grand Prix cars and beautiful, sometimes bizarre classics. But we were drawn to the fleet of immaculate and outrageous supercars assembled for the Sunday Times Supercar run up the hill. Many of these have not been seen in action before; just glimpsed in motorshow reports and the spreads of the glossies.

Mercedes SLS E-Cell

Electric Mercedes SLS scheduled for limited production run

AMG E-Cell badged but originating at Mercedes’ Norwegian establishment, this wunder-electro-monster is set to stun with it’s performance and driveability. Claimed to perform close to the petrol engined version, this day-glow yellow giant has maximum torque on hand from virtually zero revs, guaranteeing a mighty thrust in the back under acceleration. AMG’s engineers have steered closer to Audi’s E-Tron all electric car than BMW’s Vision hybrid concept. Carrying just one power source appeals from a purist’s perspective, but you can hardly avoid noticing that there’s no quoted range in the specs…Just how far can you go drawing 535bhp out of a bunch of Li-Po cells?!

We love the central dash display, losing a ton of knobs and allowing all sorts of context sensitive info to be shown large and legible. You’ll see this trickling down to many cars in the near future. Tesla’s S saloon being the most ambitiously knob-free to come. Horny too is the more aggressive detailing of grille, vents and active front spoiler.
