BMW announce a special track day version of their M3, the GTS

Yesterday Porsche announced the GT2 RS road going racer. The boys down in Munich, answering to the age-old rivalry, are not going to be left out of the equation – so here it is: the BMW M3 GTS, a car equipped for the track day, but with road-legal credentials. Like the Porsche it sheds 70kgs by ditching all sorts of kit, such as the rear side and back windows. You get polycarbonate ones instead. Carbon-reinforced plastic roof and trim help shave the weight too. Like the Porsche you get welcome power-to-weight improvements. The BMW 3.4 kg/bhp, The Porsche 2.2 kg/bhp – that could be quite a clear difference on the track! Off the track the difference will no doubt swing the other way as the GT2 RS will cost 235,000 Euros in Germany. BMW haven’t revealed the price yet, but it’s likely to be significantly less – possibly in proportion to the difference in P2WRatio? Ummh, maybe not. The BMW’s price will include six-point racing harnesses and fire extinguisher though. Both have roll cages as standard. All in all a nice piece of kit to drive to the track, scare your passenger and look the part in the process. Only thing is; they are all going to be orange – hey, what’s wrong with yellow, it’s only a couple shades away on the colour pallets?! Read on for specs.

The New Porsche 911 GT2 RS most powerful 911 ever

You’re a car manufacturer exhibiting at the Moscow motor show, so you need some new metal to show off, right? Except they mean business in Russia, so poncing around with some-eco concept is not going to endear you to the Gasprom billionaires eager to flout some mean motoring muscle. Bring forth the 620bhp Porker GT2 RS. You can trump your Igors as well as your Donalds with “Most powerful Road Porsche ever”, or “7 minutes and a bit ’round the ‘Ring”. Cool, that is, ’till the next iteration of the 911, which, historically has to be ’round the next kurve (or at the Paris Show next September?)

We’re fans of lightness here at YW, so the news that this GT2 RS sheds 70kgs over it’s GT2 sibling is welcome. You’ve just ejected an adult passenger’s weight. Now consider there’s an extra 90bhp to play with and it’s hardly a surprise that this is one quick car. Power-to-weight ratio is king, as long as you can still transmit torque to the road, and with 325/30 ZR 19 width rubber, it should translate into fast forward motion. How’s this weight lost? Carbon bonnet, inner door panels, seats, spoilers and…these days every damn thing is made of carbon!

Porsche’s Geneva Show was all hybrids, but there’s none of that here. To keep PC the GT2 RS squeezes a couple of extra miles out of a gallon of jungle juice and coughs out a few less CO2s. Mention this under your breath in certain circles though, as 284 g/km and 23.7 mpg is not exactly “green”. Maybe it’s time to refresh the smaller cars in Porsche’s lineup, rather than magic another über-batmobile out of the Stuttgart hat. Where’s the new Boxster/Cayman? That’s more up our street – leave the Cayennes and Panemeras (hippos and mammoths) and give us the new wünder-sports-lightweights (hares and whippets).

Look hunky with Porsche’s Official Aerokit Cup bodykit

You know when you were young and got your first car? Your immediate hankering was for something faster and hornier than your insurance bill would permit. So instead you fitted your puny-mobile with wide arches, hunky tyres and spoilers. This turned your bland-mobile into a shed, that you’d look back at with nostalgia but acute embarrassment later in life. Now, you’re a mature 30 or 40 something adult, you own a tasty sportscar but remember the fun of modding your motor. Now is the time to take your Porsche 911 back to the dealer to have Porsche’s new Aerokit Cup package retrofitted so that you’ll look the part turning up in the race paddock.

Porsche have released a body kit to make your 911 look like the racers that compete in the Mobil 1 Supercup. This translates to new front chin spoiler and rear fixed wing. You also have the option of fitting paddle shifts a-la-911-Turbo. But to take you back to the 60’s – 70’s …. you can also get a five-spoke retro alloy. All this is ludicrously expensive of course, but hey, you knew that already when the words Official Porsche were uttered. You could “save” money by ordering your 911 with these mods factory fitted too.

Istanbul, Turkey and yellow cars

FIAT taksi waits for passengers near mosque

Yellow Taksi in Istanbul

There are very few private yellow cars in Turkey. A recent trip to Istanbul verified this. Plenty of yellow trucks, we even spotted a yellow helicopter, but no cars…That’s because Istanbul’s taxis, or “taksi” are yellow, so who in their right mind would want to be flagged down and directed to the Blue Mosque when dropping off the kids at school? Unable to spare the time to drive to Turkey in the YW yellow Golf (!), we were obliged to jump aboard the odd taksi for our long weekend in the capital. Obliged, sounds forceful, but we had been warned of the super-hero standard of the cabbie’s driving there. Super-heroes, can skip traffic lights, dodge potholes, slip through traffic at the speed of light without ever endangering life or limb. And these super-schumachers don’t even need to stop at a phone booth to stick their underpants on the outside. Good thing that YouTube is banned in Turkey so they can’t watch the video of the ride, although word has it a few seconds organizing a proxy server circumnavigates this embarrassing censorship.
