Behind those is the ungainly new Panamera, but our attention was grabbed by the 911 GT3 RS, which really sets the pulse racing. Racing of course is the idea, as GT3′s tend to be a bit harsh for everyday driving, but serve up some of the best driving experiences around, especially for trackdays.

2009 IAA Frankfurt Auto / Motor Show – day1 – Mercedes SLS

We wandered over to the Mercedes hall, and notice we said hall, not stand, as they have their very own hall just like BMW, and so need to put on a spectacular performance. There’s only one car that really turns heads here: the new SLS AMG Gullwing sportscar. Carefully evoking, if not copying the original Gullwing it remains pretty faithful style-wise, once you’ve overlooked the non-round headlights.

The important fact to note is that this is not a show car but a production reality, which arrives for sale in the UK in the summer of 2010.

Yellowwheels is live at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. And so is most of the world’s motoring press! So rather than boring you with every conceivable newness, we’ll follow our hearts and bring you the stuff that really makes your palette salivate!

Day 1
Undoubtedly our first day’s scouting and filming, found us gravitating towards Ferrari’s 458. Whilst its not it’s not as spectacular as an Enzo, it’s an important departure from the 430 and 360 that preceded it. The press photos that were circulating all over the web shortly before Frankfurt, left not a lot to be guessed at, but there’s no substitute for seeing a car in the flesh, albeit in the artificial situation of a motor show. In profile the waspish side slices hinted at the proportions of a Zonda, the nose felt slightly Renault like, but the rear was unmistakably Ferrari Enzo, F430. Banks of LED lights run vertically down to projector main beams on the nose. Inside it’s again Enzo/430/F1 evolution, with prominent central rev counter ruling all before you.

Elegant or just exciting? it’s certainly captivated us. Here’s a gallery of images so you can judge for yourself

Yellowwheels – Live at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show B

the Show’s kicked off we’re at the BMW stand where the Vision Concept stars as glitzy intro to BMW’s hybrid platform. It’s impressive enough as a static display, but wait, all the cars except the Vision are moving off and doing a full lap of Hall 11! It’s slightly reminicent of FIAT’s factory roof test [...]

Mini have the Roadster version of the Coupe Concept on their stand. Looks a strong contender for production.

Across the Hall from Mini, Rolls Royce revealed their new Ghost. It left us a bit cold in muted sober colours, and then walking between Halls, we spotted a white one. In daylight it suddenly had greater presence. We couldn’t help noticing Rowan Atkinson asking Rolls top brass a ton of questions: I wonder what colour Mr Bean would order?
