Fisker – They’ve been keeping quiet

Fisker: News had been so sparse, whilst Tesla was splashed all over the media, that we wondered if they had floundered. Luckily not, as a company with such credentials, deserves to make it’s mark on the automotive landscape. Lo and behold today they started tweeting, with a flurry of news links. A sure sign that the silence is over and they are courting publicity. First off is a link to a USA Today feature of a real car in the real world and then a link to a youtube video of the car lapping Laguna Seca racetrack (see next page). We say: bring on more news, as this has to be one of the more promising new wave cars under development.

British Team Breaks Oldest Land Speed Record

This has to be the most bonkers record attempt in history? I mean, when even a boggo uber-repmobile has a 155 mph speed limiter built in, why would you be jubilant over reaching the not-breathtaking speed of 139.843 mph? That’s what the British steam car team just achieved, not on the Kingston bypass, but all the way over in sunny califor-n-i-a. The fact that they just broke a record that stood for over 100 years might tell you something…Hats off to true British adventurers!

Clearly 139 mph in a steam powered car must be a real achievement as it took a whole 25ft of carbon fibre/aluminium/steel plus 12, yes 12 boilers to do it! Read on for the whole story and photos.

Update
Yesterday at 8.22am (California time) Don Wales successfully set another land speed record for a steam powered car. The car set the record for a measured kilometre – achieving an average speed of 148.308mph on two runs.

Tomtom Satnav app on iPhone 3G

YW have been waiting quite some time for a real satnav app to become available for Apple’s iPhone. When the 3G version came on the scene about a year ago sporting GPS built in, our hopes were high, but we had to do with Google Map’s approximation: not real satellite navigation, more moving map showing current position and suggested route. This was fine until you either went into an area of poor mobile reception (good service needed to download the next map) or missed a turning as it would not recalculate the route.

The much anticipated Tomtom satnav app for iPhone was released last week on 18th August. We downloaded version 1.0 immediately and installed it on a 1 year old 3G model running iPhone 3.0 OS (Operating System). we don’t have a 3Gs but decided that if it worked well on the older model, it should bode well for the newer machine and be compatible with a huge number of iPhones. We downloaded the UK and Ireland app at £59.99, very expensive for an iPhone app, but good value if you consider the cheapest satnav devices start around the £100-150 range. The app installed fine, and started up reasonably quickly.

Ferrari 16M Scuderia convertible, and has the credit crunch crashed supercar sales?

Not if these two guys are typical. Cliff Fox, on left, just took delivery of his Ferrari convertible 16M Scuderia, swopping his coupe for it, and Nick Fake, right, has ordered a yellow 16M just like the one he is sitting in, to go alongside the coupe that’s already part of his collection.

We really have to give the thumbs up to guys like these, the car landscape would be rather tedious without buyers of interesting or spectacular cars spending their spondooniks. Think how much less ravishing the British Isles would be without their stately homes and castles. If you think this is elitist, just think how many people from all walks of life stump up for National Trust membership to support their upkeep every year. We just enjoy seeing supercars out on the road, full stop!

Ford Custom Street Rod model at Santa Pod

Guest Contributor David Jefferis, from our friends over at Scale Model News, just visited Santa Pod Raceway and fell for this 1:36 scale 1950s-era Ford Custom Street Rod model. There’s usually a treasure trove of models at car races and events. Collecting can be quite addictive but you need to be selective. David kindly let us re-post his report
