Yellowwheels Colour Concept Golf GTi MK3

Yellowwheels.com automotive webzine and how it came about

We’ve been asked many times why we started a website called Yellowwheels.com. The answer lies parked on our office drive. Resplendent in a shade of yellow easy to spot in large car parks, our Colour Concept Golf GTi inspired the USP of the site. But before you point out the wheels are not yellow, a domain name search revealed that our first choice Yellowcar had been bagged by a spanish hire car company. No matter, Yellowwheels allows us to aim wider than the narrow confines of automotive yellowdom! Last autumn we featured a JCB loader, and we are not averse to dipping into cycling, trucking or motoring accessories: it’s whatever is special or appeals and if it’s yellow that’s a bonus ;-) . Just like our favourite, ultra-popular biking site www.pinkbike.com which is hardly littered with pink bikes, we named it yellowwheels to make it distinct and memorable rather than crazily specialised. Having said that, a yellow Lambo Gallardo is all that’s needed to make us salivate uncontrollably !

What do you get if you mix a cricketer, a kart track, and a litre of petrol?

We thought we’d send our learned correspondent to find out. Timtim knows enough about cricket to fill a postage stamp – ideal we think so he’ll pay attention to the technicalities of brewing jungle juice and not sink to his knees in front of sporting gods!

Timtim: I’m off to Sandown Park in the outer reaches of the Greater London metropolis. My mission to bring you the secrets of saving fuel with Shell’s new 95 octane miser “FuelSave”. The answer my friends is not letting your car be blown by the wind but to fuel up and drive. Simplistic? Yes! Disappointing answer? It’s just that there’s not much to swallow. Your car will experience reduced piston friction, cleaner valves and detonate it’s fuel-air mixture a nanosecond earlier. Shell say you’ll save a litre per tankful which sounds more impressive than  ”save 1/60th of your consumption” or “1.66666666667% more fuel efficient” (if your typical car holds 60 litres). But before you all nod off, Shell have wheeled in cricket superstar Freddie Flintoff to bat for them. Come on Freddie your challenge starts now. Watch the video for the answer to life, the universe and saving the princely price of a couple of pints of milk…Oh, and there’s an official site where you can take the Flintoff challenge

Auto Regalia USB Mini & Lamborghini Murcielago

We pit Lambo’s Murcielago against Mini Cooper in this USB giant test!

After reading our Motormouse review back last autumn, motor gizmo specialist Auto Regalia were keen for us to try other products. “How about a review of a USB stick” they asked? Seriously underwhelmed by the prospect – I mean, a stick is a stick, it’s just that some are made larger than others, right? “Hey, these ones are die-cast metal, beautifully detailed miniatures” they retorted. “We can even supply them in yellow!” Well that clinched it, and behold, we have a brace of “HotWheels” with capacities only juggernauts could muster to play with (4 GB in this case ).

Auto Regalia USB Mini Cooper - wheels turn

Whipped out of their packaging, the weight and solidity of the castings were immediately apparent. No flimsy, snap-fit-plastic, 5-second wonder, but finely detailed models of the real thing. Even the Mini’s taillight cluster surrounds are chrome painted. Put the two models together and the major difference is the huge rear protuberance on the 1:72 scale Lambo; like someone bolted a fridge on the back. Unlike the Mini, the USB connector is not retractable and ruins the lines of the car’s backend. Underneath the Mini a press-and-slide catch neatly stows the USB connector when not in use.

Mega Rally big air moments

Mega air for Sebastien Ogier at Turkish Rally

How high can you go? Rally stars take 85 metres jump in their stride!

Gratuitously presented here, for no other reason than they are amazing rally moments, are 10 of the most spectacular jumps from Citroen’s last 10, highly successful, rally seasons. Sebastien Loeb, commenting on his incredible Turkish jump, said: “It was an incredible sensation as we were up in the air for several seconds. Not for a moment did we imagine that we would jump so far.” Championship leaders Citroen and Sebastien will tackle the WRC Finnish Rally (29-31st July) from a commanding lead, and no doubt leap for joy as only they know how!

Artist Tim Layzell with his highly stylised car scenes

YW interviews artist Tim Layzell at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Meet top notch artist Tim Layzell, a star in the automotive art world. He has been featured extensively in the magazines and papers, and so we, here at YW thought he could do with a bit of web exposure for good measure.

The Mountaineers ©Tim Layzell

It was while wandering through the numerous trade stands at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed that we stopped dead in our tracks, in awe of the gripping images hung on Tim’s stand. A fleeting memory of having seen Tim’s work on an Octane Mag cover and maybe also a poster or two, had garnered a Pavlovian reaction in the mind. So this is the guy responsible for the striking pop-artesque 60′s racing designs that are so distinctive and recognisable. Think, detail and accuracy of a Tintin illustration meets punch of a Hockney pop-art painting and you understand the depth of talent and mastery of style and perspective that this artist wields, making his images utterly compelling. Swivel round and you are presented with Tim’s, photorealistic, fantastically detailed second style; an enduring mix of flair, accuracy and emotion – this guy’s got talent!
